The Native Project, a Spokane-based social-service nonprofit, is proposing a new $8 million project for children and youth services at 1907 W. Maxwell, in Spokane’s West Central neighborhood, according to preliminary planning documents on file with the city of Spokane.
The proposed youth center will be located west of and across the street from the Native Project’s current headquarters, at 1803 W. Maxwell.
The site is surrounded by light industrial properties to the south and west and A.M. Cannon Park to the north.
A representative of the Native Project couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.
Pre-development application information for the project includes plans for a four-story, 12,700-square-foot facility that would house programs to provide safe, youth-oriented spaces. Such areas would include spaces for youth groups, counseling rooms, a classroom, a youth kitchen, and a ceremonial room.
The facility also will provide single offices, a break room, a staff balcony, and a conference room that can accommodate about 30 employees.
Preliminary information shows the project also will have 26 parking stalls, a security fence, and an exterior courtyard with open space.
The Native Project purchased the property in August 2020 for $200,000, tax documents from the state Department of Revenue show.
Spokane-based Womer & Associates Inc., an architecture and engineering company, is designing the facility. A general contractor isn’t listed on pre-development information.
One storage building will be demolished to make way for the youth center, and construction could begin as soon as this spring, environmental documents state.
