Internal medicine vet joins emergency clinic
Dr. Adam Ginman, a veterinarian who specializes in internal medicine, has joined the Pet Emergency Clinic & Referral Center, located at 21 E. Mission in Spokane.
Ginman says he believes that he is one of few internal veterinary medicine specialists in the Inland Northwest. Internal medicine veterinarians, he says, typically treat dogs and cats with diseases of the liver, pancreas, endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, or immune system.
"I usually see patients where a second opinion is needed, if the diagnosis is difficult, or if the patient is not responding to what would normally be an appropriate treatment," Ginman says.
He says Pet Emergency Clinic sees referral patients during regular business hours, and operates as an emergency-only clinic after hours.
The clinic is located in a building with two other veterinary medicine practices, Inland Empire Veterinary Imaging, which specializes in veterinary radiology, and Veterinary Surgical Specialists.
Ginman graduated in 2003 from the University of Liverpool, in the United Kingdom, and completed his residency at Iowa State University before practicing for a year at a veterinary clinic in Kansas City, Missouri, he says. He is one of seven veterinarians at Pet Emergency Clinic, and says the clinic has 30 employees overall.
1920s-style restaurant opens in Coeur d'Alene
Donita Mattern and her daughter, Mallory Mattern, have opened a restaurant in Coeur d'Alene, named The Fedora Pub & Grille, at 1726 W. Kathleen.
The eatery occupies a 6,000-square-foot space that formerly was home to Wagner's Hofbrau, which closed last year, Donita Mattern says.
Mattern says she purchased the space for the restaurant in June after it went up for auction, and since has remodeled the space completely.
The restaurant's decor features 1920s-style accents, including period photos, rich leathers, and other antique pieces, such as a hostess stand made from an ice chest from the era, Mattern says. She says 1920s silent movies are projected on the walls throughout the restaurant.
The dining room has seating capacity for about 180, and an outdoor patio area can seat up to 24, Mattern says. The establishment's lounge area, which serves beer and wine only, has about 35 seats and features leather couches and televisions on which patrons can watch sporting events.
The Fedora's menu features traditional pub-style foods, including burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads, and is served all day from breakfast to close, Mattern says. Entree prices range from $7.50 to $15, she says.
The restaurant currently has about 50 employees, she says.
Spokane Cash Register bought by Boise concern
Spokane Cash Register, a longtime vendor of cash registers and other point-of-sale equipment, has been purchased by Boise-based Teknor Inc., and renamed DirectPOS-Spokane. Teknor owns several other such companies in the region.
Teknor will continue to operate the Spokane operation at 2823 N. Monroe and has retained its six employees. It also has expanded the business's product line to include two new credit-card processing systems, says Teknor co-owner Billy Knorpp.
He says his family's business saw the opportunity to purchase Spokane Cash Register because its former owner, Mike Coker, wanted to retire, and because the business also sold the same micro-hospitality systems and cash registers that Teknor sells at its other stores.
"It was a nice way to expand our business and sell the same things here that we already sell elsewhere," he says.
Knorpp says micro-hospitality systems are mostly used in restaurants and bars and feature touch screens that can be customized to display a specific menu and allow sales to be re-accessed at any time during a transaction.
Spokane Cash Register has operated here since the early 1960s.
Attorney here branches out with own law firm
Patrick J. Kirby, an attorney here, has opened his own law firm, Patrick J. Kirby Attorney at Law PLLC, at 421 W. Riverside.
Kirby recently left the Spokane firm of Campbell, Bissell, & Kirby PLLC, located at 7 S. Howard, a firm he worked at here for about four years. That practice will now do business under the name of Campbell & Bissell, he says.
Kirby has practiced law in the Spokane area for about 15 years, and says he decided to open his own firm to have better access to his clients, which he retained.
He says his new firm will focus on employment and labor management law, commercial litigation, and business contract disputes.
Kirby received his law degree from Gonzaga University in 1993 and practices law in Washington and Idaho, he says.
Currently, the firm employs one other person as support staff.
Couple opens Pawpular pet shop in Liberty Lake
Mara and Carl Crowell, of Otis Orchards, have opened Pawpular Companions Boutique, in Liberty Lake, a specialty pet shop that sells food, toys, and accessories for cats and dogs.
The shop is located at 21950 E. Country Vista Drive, in a 1,000-square-foot leased space in a commercial district west of Liberty Lake Road. Co-owner Mara Crowell says she recently left her corporate job at a Bellevue-based company in April, and she and her husband, who retired from his job in the construction industry four years ago, decided to start their own business here.
"I have always had a love for pets and people, so this is the perfect business for me," she says.
Crowell says the shop carries a variety of food, apparel, treats, toys, and accessories for dogs and cats, and that it caters to a wide range of customers, from "outdoor sport dogs to couture dogs."
"Our tagline is 'cool gear from camo to couture,'" she says.
Crowell says the store is pet-friendly, and owners are encouraged to bring their dogs in to sample products there.
She says that currently, only she and her husband are working at the shop.
