Rebuilding Together Spokane, a nonprofit that helps low-income residents with needed home improvements through donations of labor, services, and materials, is planning to participate in a national rebuilding blitz on April 28.
The group has selected six Hillyard-area homes to repair and rehabilitate on National Rebuilding Day, says Todd Harnetiaux, a Rebuilding Together Spokane board member and president of Modern Construction & Consulting Services LLC.
Rebuilding Together Spokane also is working with Gonzaga University student group April's Agents and the university's faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and regents on a similar residential-improvement project, scheduled for April 14 in the Logan neighborhood near GU.
The organization, which is the local chapter of Rebuilding Together USA, is seeking volunteers, including skilled workers, to help with the National Rebuilding Day work, which will include painting, building fences, deck and porch repairs, roof and gutter repairs, constructing a wheelchair ramp and handrails, and yard work, Harnetiaux says.
The repair costs, not including volunteer labor, are estimated at around $1,000 for most of the homes, although two of the selected homes need to be reroofed completely, and Rebuilding Together Spokane is seeking additional cash and in-kind donations for those jobs, he says.
The organization also plans to install security, safety, and plumbing upgrades at St. Patrick Catholic School, at 2706 E. Queen, Harnetiaux says.
On last year's National Rebuilding Day, Rebuilding Together Spokane volunteers improved and repaired nine homes and four nonprofit facilities, providing, labor, services, and materials valued at more than $90,000.
Rebuilding Together Spokane's sponsors include Albertsons Inc., FLSmidth Spokane Inc., Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Spokane, Modern Construction, First Presbyterian Church of Spokane, Providence Health & Services, and Spokane Housing Authority.
