Former minor-league baseball player Teddy Hall and his wife, Sylvia, have opened a new indoor baseball-and-softball training facility called Athletic Edge LLC, at 11110 E. Empire, in Spokane Valley.
Athletic Edge opened March 12 and is located in a leased, 5,000-square-foot light-industrial space with 19-foot ceilings. Teddy Hall says they spent $20,000 to equip the building.
The facility has three batting cages and offers one-on-one training, group training, cage and facility rentals, team lessons, and position-specific camps. Hall says it's preferred that athletes be at least 8 years old, and players are given free evaluations before starting instruction.
The company charges $50 per hour for an individual with one instructor and $10 thereafter for each athlete with that same instructor. Individuals and teams can also rent the facilities$30 an hour for an individual cage and $100 an hour for the whole facility. Parents with their kids are also welcome.
So far, the training center has 50 to 60 kids who come once a week, and Hall says he hopes to double that number. He also has plans to expand into other sports. There is more space for lease in the building where the training facility is located, and he says he and his wife hope to grow the business quickly.
In addition to the Halls, the company employs two people, both coaches.
Ken Johnson is Athletic Edge's director of baseball and softball operations and will lead the training team. He comes to Athletic Edge with over 37 years of coaching experience, following five years of playing professionally for the New York Yankees, from 1968 to 1973. He was inducted into the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996.
Athletic Edge's other coach, Shawn Henry, is currently head baseball coach for Newport High School.
Hall hopes to hire more coaches as business increases.
Doug Byrd, of Byrd Real Estate Group LLC, handled Athletic Edge's lease of the space on Empire.
