The city of Spokane Valley awarded a contract in mid-March valued at $1.1 million to Inland Asphalt Co., of Spokane, for a Sullivan Road rehabilitation project, says city spokeswoman Carolbelle Branch.

That project, which will involve about a 1 1/2-mile stretch of Sullivan between Trent Avenue and Flora Pit Road, north of Interstate 90, is expected to start by the end of this month and will take seven or eight weeks to complete, she says.

Work will include resurfacing that section of Sullivan, Branch says. Inland Asphalt also will upgrade stormwater pipes and drains, install sidewalk ramps where needed, and upgrade traffic signal loops, which help detect traffic at lights.

The project calls for the installation of stormwater swales between Sullivan Park and Sullivan Road, along the east side of the park's parking lot, Branch says. Stormwater swales are used to filter water runoff before entering drains and storm sewers.

Branch says 90 percent of funding for the project will come from city street preservation funds, and 10 percent will come from city stormwater funding.
