Laborers Local 238 is considering constructing a new, larger building at its current location north of downtown, says Dave Hawkins, the union's business manager.
A 5,400-square-foot building would replace the current union building Local 238 owns at 1330 N. Calispel, just north of the Rock Pointe Corporate Center complex, predevelopment plans filed recently with the city of Spokane show.
"We've got some plans drawn up and we're doing some pricing, but we don't know if we're going to do that this year or next year," Hawkins says.
The preliminary plans show the project, with an estimated construction cost of $800,000, would include three above-ground levels and a basement.
The main floor would include an 1,800-square-foot meeting hall, and a total of eight offices would be on the basement, second, and third levels, plans show. The second level also would include a conference room and a reception area, the plans show.
Garco Construction Inc., of Spokane, would be the contractor on the project, the plans say.
The local's current 2,500-square-foot, single-story building was constructed in 1956.
Local 238's membership includes construction workers and other laborers. In a report filed last month with the U.S. Department of Labor, Local 238 reported it had 775 members, assets totaling $1.2 million, and liabilities of $40,000. The local is affiliated with Laborers' International Union of North America, which on its website claims to have 500,000 members.
