Coeur d'Alene businessman Jim Kinney has bought a 10-acre parcel of land in Hayden where he plans to build a soccer complex a short distance north of The Dome, which is a smaller indoor sports facility he opened last year.
The planned facility, which will be named the Hayden Soccer Complex, will be located at the northeast corner of Lacey Avenue and U.S. 95, about five miles north of Interstate 90, Kinney says.
Kinney is the longtime owner of Midway Restaurant Equipment & Supply, which moved a few years ago to Coeur d'Alene from the site now occupied by The Dome.
Kinney estimates the cost of the planned soccer project will be about $2.7 million, which includes the nearly $600,000 purchase price for the land.
He says he envisions a 31,000-square-foot steel building with an indoor youth soccer field, and an outdoor regulation-sized soccer field. The planned indoor facility will be 250 feet long by 120 feet wide with a 24-foot ceiling, he says.
For the outdoor field, Kinney says he plans to plant grass this fall with the goal of being ready for outdoor play by June 1, which is about when he plans to begin construction of the indoor facility.
Coeur d'Alene architect Scott Cranston is designing the project, and Kinney says he hasn't selected a contractor for the building, yet.
Dan Davis, broker at Dan Davis Realty, of Coeur d'Alene, negotiated the real estate transaction.
Kinney says he believes there's strong demand already for the planned facility, because The Dome, located at 167 W. Miles, near the northeast corner of Miles Avenue and U.S. 95, is operating at capacity.
"We have our own club with 14 teams," Kinney says. Players in various age brackets range from 4 years old to adult, he says.
"We're running about 200 kids right now," he says.
The Dome, which has a pro shop, a cafe, two banquet rooms, and offices, often is booked from 7 a.m. to well beyond 9 p.m., Kinney says.
He says he figures the larger planned facilities will enable the soccer club to expand to 20 teams.
While the complex will be built for soccer as the main sport, the planned venue will be used for practice and competition for other sports such as lacrosse and arena football, Kinney says.
"We've got four arena football teams signed up," he claims.
Like The Dome, the Hayden Soccer Complex also will have indoor batting cages and will accommodate year-round baseball training, he says.
