The Shilo Inn & Suites at 702 W. Appleway in Coeur d’Alene is set to undergo about $3 million in renovations starting next month, according to its new owners.
The three-story, 138-guest room hotel was purchased last April by Idaho Progress of CDA LLC and will be operated by Butte, Montana-based Town Pump Inc.
Bill McGladdery, Town Pump’s Butte-based director of hotel operations, says the Coeur d’Alene property is the company’s second Idaho hotel acquisition.
“We also operate the Sleep Inn & Suites in Idaho Falls, as well as 12 other hotels in Montana,” he says.
Town Pump is best known for operating 22 travel plazas and 78 convenience stores across Montana. Some of those convenience stores also include casinos such as Lucky Lil’s Casino, Montana Lil’s Casino, and Magic Diamond Casino.
McGladdery says the company has major renovations planned, some of which began shortly after the company purchased the site.
“We’ve done some behind-the-scenes work throughout the summer season,” he says. “We are working with a local architect but have yet to select a contractor for the project. Renovations will start next month and hopefully be completed by April, for the start of the next summer season.”
Next month, McGladdery says, the company plans to begin a total renovation of all the hotel’s guest rooms, the main lobby, breakfast room, and meeting room areas.
“Almost everything in the guest rooms will be new, and we’ll also be creating a new breakfast area and business center, as well as small marketplace for guests to purchase snacks and frozen food items,” he says.
Renovation plans also include updating the building’s exterior, including the lighting in its parking lot.
McGladdery says once all renovations are completed, the company will be placing two new hotel brands on the building, with 92 rooms becoming the Comfort Inn & Suites, and the remaining 46 becoming MainStay Suites, an extended-stay hotel brand.
He says the company chose the two brands because it felt the area needed more extended-stay options for guests.
“In our research of the market, we felt there was a lack of extended-stay facilities for guests like construction crews or visiting nurses,” he says. “The extended-stay rooms come with full kitchens so they’re also nice for traveling families or other leisure hotel guests. We also have the option of using those rooms as overflow for more regular transient guests if needed.”
McGladdery says in addition to a pool and spa, the hotel’s amenities include an exercise room and 1,000 square feet of meeting space.
Following the ownership change, Town Pump retained most of the Shilo Inn’s employees and added additional staff for the remaining summer season, he says.
“We currently have about 30 staff at that location, and plan to add more employees again this spring,” he says. “We’re hoping business levels continue to increase enough to support those additional staff.”
