Spokane Public Schools has bought a nearly 2-acre parcel of land at 2904 E. Sprague, where the district plans eventually to expand student-education and staff-training programs based at the nearby Libby Center, says Mark Anderson, the district’s associate superintendent for school support services.
The newly acquired parcel is located at the southeast corner of Sprague Avenue and Regal Street, the former site of a small restaurant less than a block north of the Libby Center, which is at 2900 E. First.
Anderson says the site initially will be used for Libby Center parking.
The district likely will expand the Libby Center onto the site as its programs grow, he says.
The two-story former middle school is home to gifted-and-talented education programs and staff-development programs.
“As we continue to thinking about a variety of programs, we may have the need for extra space,” Anderson says.
An example of a growing program, he says, is the Spanish-language immersion program, which was launched at the Libby Center’s kindergarten level last year. Coming this fall, the program will include the first grade.
“Eventually, we’ll have a K-6 Spanish-emersion program,” Anderson says.
Spokane commercial real estate brokers Mike Livingston, of Kiemle & Hagood Co., and Matt Byrd, of SVN Cornerstone, negotiated the transaction.
The Libby Center was built in 1928. Its middle school mission changed in 1996 to focus on the needs of gifted students and staff-development programs.
