Spokane-based office furniture dealership Contract Design Associates Inc. has changed hands following its founders’ retirement, says Gwendolyn Marlow, a current co-owner.
After 37 years, husband-and-wife duo Bruce and Jill Butterworth retired on Dec. 31, says Marlow.
Marlow and the founders’ son, Jared Butterworth, bought the company and took over operations starting Jan. 1. Marlow declines to disclose terms of the transaction.
Marlow and Butterworth first became principals and shareholders in 2016.
Marlow, the company’s longtime sales manager, works out of the Spokane office, at 402 E. Sprague. Butterworth, the company’s Montana territory manager, is based at its second location in Missoula, Mont., which opened in 2011.
Established in 1980, Contract Design Associates provides furniture for mostly commercial clients, including those in health care, government, higher education, and other professional offices, he says. It also sells some furniture for residential uses, says Marlow.
The company occupies 16,000 square feet at its Spokane location, which includes a showroom and warehouse. The company is the only dealership in the area that offers Zeeland, Mich.-based Herman Miller Inc. products, Marlow asserts.
She started working for Contract Design Associates in 2001, she says.
Butterworth grew up in the business but officially started working for the company in 2010, she says.
Contract Design Associates has 23 employees companywide, 18 of whom are in the Spokane area.
