Preliminary plans on file with the city of Spokane show $5 million in renovations are planned at the Cathedral Plaza apartments, located at 1120 W. Sprague downtown.
The 15-story, 150-unit apartment building is managed by Catholic Charities of Spokane affiliate, Catholic Housing Communities.
Catholic Housing Communities couldn’t be reached immediately for comment on the project.
Predevelopment plans for the project call for converting eight lower-level units into accessible units in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The project would involve installing hardwired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in all units, replacing wiring throughout the building, and replacing kitchen cabinets, air-conditioning units, and ventilation fans in all of the units.
The project also would involve replacing kitchen appliances, lighting, and flooring as needed on a per-unit basis.
The predevelopment application also lists planned updates to the building’s exterior balconies, windows, and entry doors.
Planned common-area improvements include new entry doors and updates to the building’s laundry room, restrooms, and mailbox area.
Outdoor work for the project includes landscaping, repair and painting of fences and railings, a larger trash compactor and a new dumpster enclosure.
Preliminary plans list the project contact as Mark King, of Spokane-based ZBA Architecture PS, who says the project is still in a preliminary phase.
“The project is still very much in the early planning stages, so we haven’t committed to anything just yet,” he says.
As the Journal has previously reported, each of the building’s floors has 10 630-square-foot, one-bedroom apartments.
