Manufacturing plants rise on opposite sides of city

Projects for McKinstry, HollisterStier valued at over $300 million

March 30, 2023
Mike McLean

Separate manufacturing facilities are under construction in the east and west areas of Spokane.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing and packaging company Jubilant HollisterStier LLC obtained building permits in September to begin the first of two expansion projects with a total value of $285 million.

The first project, a two-story, 50,000-square-foot addition to its facility at 3525 N. Regal, is valued at $92 million and will house the plant’s third high-speed, injectable fill line with technology that will provide high levels of sterility. The project also will include two 300-square-foot freeze dryers called lyophilizers.

Lydig Construction Inc., of Spokane Valley, is the contractor on the Line 3 project, and IPS-Integrated Project Services is providing design and engineering services.

Construction is expected to be completed by year-end, with the fill line to be operational about a year later.

In addition, the company plans a separate $193 million expansion that will add a fourth line and double its injectable filling capacity by 2025.

The Line 4 project, which is being designed by Spokane-based NAC Architecture, will add 147,200 square feet to the west end of the existing main building and include the filling line, a shipping center, an electron microscopy lab, a packaging area, and warehouse space.

No contractor is listed on the planning documents for the Line 4 project.

Jack Wright, vice president of sales and marketing, earlier told the Journal the company will add a total of 450 jobs to the Spokane facility by around 2025. The company had 732 employees here as of last November.

West of Spokane, McKinstry Co., the Seattle-based construction and energy-efficiency contractor with a strong Spokane-area presence, is constructing an $18.6 million, 68,000-square-foot manufacturing facility it will share with affiliate Overcast Innovations LLC.

Lydig Construction is the contractor on the project at 9470 W. 21st, east of Flint Road, and north of Spokane Airport. Press Architecture LLC, of Spokane, is the architect on the project.

Thomas Tellefsen, vice president of Pacific Northwest mechanical new construction for McKinstry, said concrete work was underway with tilt-up walls being poured in early March.

Tellefsen says the project is on track to be completed by year-end, with manufacturing starting in the first quarter of 2024. The facility, which will employ about 120 people, will produce prefabricated sheet metal, piping, and plumbing materials.
