A new vinyl record and vintage goods store called Total Trash Records & Vintage opened early this month on the eastern edge of the Browne’s Addition neighborhood, at 1601 W. Pacific.
The store’s owner, JJ Wandler, is the former co-owner of Garageland, a restaurant and bar at 230 W. Riverside that also used to sell vintage records.
“I sold Garageland to new owners last September, because I was looking to get out of the food-and-drink business,” says Wandler. “I wanted to concentrate on records and vintage stuff again, which is what we do here.”
The new shop is located in 1,000 square feet of leased space formerly occupied by a hair salon.
“We did some minor remodeling, mostly painting and lighting changes,” says Wandler.
The shop is named after a song by 1990s alternative rock group Sonic Youth, Wandler says.
“We sell both records and vintage items including furniture, pop culture collectibles, art, posters, and games,” he says. “Because of our location, I’ve been trying to focus on smaller, unique pieces, the kind of stuff people who live in apartments here might enjoy.”
The shop has one employee in addition to Wandler.
Regarding plans for the future, he says the shop will showcase local bands once a week on Saturday afternoons, and will host record swap meets in its parking lot later this summer.
