Saffron Salon Inc., originally known as First Avenue Studio Salon, has moved and reopened in larger quarters at 8423 E. Sprague, in Spokane Valley.
Saffron Salon owner Tiana Walter says that when her lease was up in the First Avenue location, a 600-square-foot space with room for only four stylist stations, it made sense for her to find a location with more space and change the name.
The studio, which opened in 2014, previously had been located at 11811 E. First.
Walter says she wanted a new salon name that conveyed her usage of organic and environmentally friendly hair products, and Saffron, an exotic spice, felt fitting.
Minor renovations, which included painting, plumbing, and electrical maintenance, began last July and were completed in early November.
The new space is 1,200 square feet with room for six rental stations, four of which are currently filled, says Walter. Independent stylists typically can rent stations for $450 a month.
Walter says she’s environmentally conscious, and Saffron uses Kevin Murphy hair products, which are marketed as cruelty free and environmentally friendly with recyclable packaging made from ocean-waste plastic.
As independent contractors, the stylists set their own rates for services, but haircuts typically start at $40 and color services start at $70.
The salon uses Instagram as a marketing platform, posting hairstyles that clients can peruse on the app.
“Hopefully, we’ll be busy right off the bat,” Walter says.
