Berg Manufacturing Inc., which does business as Berg Cos., the Spokane Valley-based manufacturer of remote camp shelter products, has been acquired by HDT Global Inc.

Based in Solon, Ohio, just outside of Cleveland, HDT Global provides products and services for extreme environments for use in defense, aerospace, and government sectors.

The companies completed the acquisition Sept. 18. HDT Global declines to disclose terms of the transaction. 

HDT Global spokeswoman Maria Krause says the acquisition will expand substantially HDT’s hard-wall shelter product offerings.

“HDT is one of the leaders in the design and manufacturing of expeditionary systems, and a large chunk of that includes shelters,” Krause says. “We have a broad range of soft-wall shelters, but our hard-wall offerings were not so (robust), and Berg is recognized as one of the leaders in hard-wall shelters, so it was a good fit for both of the businesses.”

In a press release, Berg Cos. President and CEO Don Myers says he’s excited to add Berg’s capabilities to HDT’s product line.

“Our expeditionary rigid-wall shelter systems dovetail nicely with HDT’s state-of-the-art expeditionary (products),” Myers says in the release.

Krause says Berg’s 220 employees will remain at its Spokane Valley manufacturing plant, at 6811 E. Mission, and day-to-day operations will be unaffected by the acquisition.

“They are actually functioning almost as a wholly-owned subsidiary of HDT Global,” Krause says.

Berg Manufacturing was founded as F.O. Berg Co., in 1883, by Frederick Oliver Berg.

As previously reported by the Journal, in 2013, Spokane Valley-based Vestis Systems Inc. bought the assets of F.O. Berg, a commercial awning manufacturer that was under the Berg Cos. umbrella. 

A year later, Berg Cos. renovated the 124,800-square-foot former Caterpillar distribution building at 6811 E. Mission in preparation for consolidating is operations there.

According to records on file with the state Department of Revenue, the governing executives at Berg Manufacturing are Myers, Andy Barrett, Ned Rumpeltes, and Tom Simpson. 

Andy Barrett is Berg’s executive director, and is co-founder and managing partner of manufacturing startup incubator The Toolbox, as well as a founding member of the Blockhouse housing development. 

Ned Rumpeltes is co-founder of business transition consulting firm Rumpeltes & Lawton LLC. 

Tom Simpson is president and CEO of nonprofit life sciences and technology business accelerator Ignite Northwest, as well as president of the Spokane Angel Alliance.
