Two companies, CXT Inc. and MV Transportation Inc., are set to shutter their Spokane operations and lay off a total of 136 workers by the end of the year, according to reports from the Washington state Employment Security Department.
Beginning Dec. 31, prefabricated concrete manufacturing company CXT, a subsidiary of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based LB Foster Co., will shut down its operations at 2420 N. Pioneer Lane, in Spokane.
That will result in layoffs for 77 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification from the Employment Security Department.
LB Foster is a manufacturer and distributor of products for transportation and energy infrastructure.
A press release from LB Foster reports the company plans to relocate its Spokane operations to Nampa, Idaho.
The new 84,000-square-foot facility in Idaho will employ approximately 80 people, similar to the number of Spokane workers who will be let go, when it gets up and running in January, according to the release. About 79,000 square feet of that will be dedicated to manufacturing, while the other 5,000 square feet will be used for offices and employee areas.
A representative of the organization couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.
CXT also has manufacturing operations in Hillsboro, Texas, and Waverly, West Virginia.
Dallas-based MV Transportation Inc., a privately-owned paratransit and passenger transportation contracting company, plans to shut down its Spokane office and lay off 59 workers. The company also expects to shutter its operations at the end of December, according to a WARN report.
Jeff Womack, Dallas-based chief marketing officer for MV, says via email the company decided not to re-compete for a contract with Spokane Transit Authority for the coming year.
He adds, “Fortunately, as with many transit contracts, the vast majority of our employees have been offered positions with the new provider.”
MV Transportation has over 150 offices nationwide and employs more than 20,000 people, according to its website.
The company also has offices in Coeur d’Alene and Seattle.
