Louise Tuffin has owned and operated her baking business out of her Spokane home for going on 20 years.
“It’s been a farmer’s market business for all these years,” says the 69-year-old Tuffin of Arabesque Bakery.
That will all change next month. Tuffin is in the process of refurbishing a 1,400-square-foot, stand-alone building she’s owned for the last seven years at 208 E. Lake in Medical Lake, which is located 15 miles west of downtown Spokane.
The building used to be home to West Side Pizza, which closed roughly eight years ago, according to Tuffin.
She and her husband, Tom Tuffin, were able to secure the purchase of the vacant building at less than a third of the purchase price of what it would’ve cost if they’d bought it in Spokane, she says.
“The plan is to be a production kitchen at first,” she says. “Maybe down the road, we’ll host store hours to the public.”
Tuffin gained local attention not long after starting her business as she was an early adopter of using whole grain products and organic ingredients in her baked breads and pastries.
Her goal is to grow the business beyond being a “little boutique bakery,” she says. “The way it’s been done kind of puts you in demand with your little following. Now, I guess I’ll see just how much in demand I am,” Tuffin says with a laugh.
