Work to replace the crane within Avista Utilities’ Post Street substation will begin Monday, March 17.
The roughly 115-year-old crane has reached the end of its serviceable life and will be replaced by its modern equivalent, according to a press release from Avista.
Post Street between Spokane Falls Blvd. and the Post Street Bridge will be closed to public vehicle traffic from March 24 through April 7.
Foot traffic around the substation will be redirected to the Centennial Trail on the south end of the bridge.
The Post Street sidewalk will remain open to foot traffic, as will Mobius Discovery Center, Spokane City Hall, the Numerica SkyRide, and the Numerica Skate Ribbon.
The Post Street substation, which overlooks the Spokane River, receives power generated from the Monroe Street and Upper Falls hydroelectric dams and distributes it throughout downtown Spokane and Avista’s power network.
