Spokane Valley City Council approved on Tuesday an $11.75 million settlement from Spokane-based Meridian Construction & Development Inc., the contractor behind the construction of Spokane Valley City Hall, which was found to have significant defects.
This is the fourth and final settlement regarding construction repairs to the building, putting an end to a legal dispute that began in 2020.
The city of Spokane Valley previously received settlements totaling nearly $2.2 million from Coeur d'Alene-based Architects West Inc., Hayden-based AllWest Testing & Engineering LLC, and Liberty Lake-based Eight31 Consulting LLC.
Initial construction of Spokane Valley City Hall was completed in September 2017. Upon occupation of the building, significant defects were discovered, and multiple consultants were hired to determine the nature and extent of the defects, according to a press release from the city.
In April 2020, the city of Spokane Valley filed a lawsuit against the four companies involved in the design and construction of the building.
In January 2023, the Council awarded a $4 million design-build contract to Spokane-based Garco Construction Inc. to remediate the building's deficiencies.
Repairs addressing the settling of the building’s foundation and its impacts were completed in August. The city currently is evaluating further necessary remediation work.
