Plans for a downtown Spokane zip line are progressing, with construction of the aerial tour attraction expected to begin in the spring.
The zip line is expected to be operational in the summer, according to Drew Stewart, of Aerial Trek LLC, which does business as Mica Moon Zip Tours, a Liberty Lake-based company selected by the city of Spokane to design, finance, build, and operate the urban zip line attraction.
“The purpose of the zip line is to help invigorate downtown Spokane, enhance the Spokane River corridor, and stimulate tourism both locally and from abroad,” Stewart says in an email to the Journal.
The 1,300-foot dual-cable zip line will start at A Place of Truths Plaza, which is located at 901 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., just north of the Spokane Public Library and overlooking the Spokane River.
The zip line will go through the southernmost archway of the Monroe Street Bridge and continue along the river until it lands in Redband Park, at 216 N. Cedar, in Peaceful Valley.
Participants will then be transported back to the start of the attraction via street-legal golf carts, during which time they will be given a guided historic tour of downtown, Stewart explains.
“The hope is to educate people about the rich history and culture of Spokane,” he says.
Mica Moon is working with Portland, Oregon-based Synergo LLC to design and build the zip line. Stewart did not immediately respond to a question regarding the cost of the project.
The city of Spokane had the idea for a downtown zip line in 2017, Stewart says. The design work and permitting phase of the privately funded project is nearly complete, he adds.
The expected price for a zip line ride is $30, Stewart says, adding that people can choose to participate in just the golf cart tour for $10 if they don’t want to do the zip line.
He declines to estimate the number of employees that will be needed to operate the attraction.
“Much like the Numerica Skyride (the gondolas), we believe the zip line will become an icon of downtown Spokane, making it a more attractive place to visit and enjoy,” Stewart says.
