The Spokane office of Volunteers of America Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho plans to develop 12 residential units in the Whitman neighborhood, north of the city’s downtown core, for veterans experiencing homelessness, according to building permit applications filed with the city of Spokane.
The site for the project dubbed Vets on N. Lacey is located at 6208 N. Lacey.
A contractor for the $2.4 million project hasn't been determined yet, according to application information. ZBA Architecture PS, of Spokane, is designing the project, and the Spokane office of Coffman Engineers Inc. is providing engineering services.
A representative from Volunteers of America couldn't be reached immediately for comment.
Project information shows five buildings will be erected or remodeled on a 0.67-acre parcel just south of the Jayne Auld Manor Apartments on the northwest corner of Lacey Street and Francis Avenue.
According to the Spokane County Assessor’s office, the property was purchased on Aug. 12 for $338,900 by VOA N Lacey LLC.
Four of the buildings will be for veteran housing, and the fifth will be a 535-square-foot structure valued at $147,100 with office space, a laundry room, and bicycle storage for the residents.
Of the remaining four buildings, one will be a two-bedroom duplex with a covered deck valued at $377,900. Two structures valued at $1.1 million combined each will have three one-bedroom apartments, and the one building valued at $755,700 will have four one-bedroom apartment units.
Volunteers of America is a faith-based nonprofit organization with a Spokane office at 525 W. Second. The organization's mission is to reduce homelessness. It operates other shelters in the Spokane region, including Hope House, at 318 S. Adams, and Alexandria’s House, at 2236 W. Pacific.
