An indoor golf simulator and speakeasy are planned at the Wonder Building, the historic bakery-turned-office building in Spokane’s North Bank neighborhood, says Denver-based developer Pete Mounsey, who heads Wonder Spokane LLC.
Yost Gallagher Construction LLC, of Spokane, is the general contractor on the project planned for the basement of the Wonder Building, at 835 N. Post, Mounsey says. Spokane-based DS Studio is designing the suite’s interior.
Mounsey says he hopes to open the golf simulator and hidden bar by early fall.
“We hope to announce more details in the next month or so," he says.
According to application information submitted with the city of Spokane, the project, named Wonderground TI, has an estimated value of $275,000.
Preliminary site plans show the project calls for constructing three golf simulator bays with a social area for golfers encompassing about 2,450 square feet of space. Additionally, plans show an 880-square-foot bar area, which is labeled as a speakeasy.
The Wonder Building is the former site of the Wonder Bread bakery that was constructed in 1909 and shuttered in 2000. The three-story structure was renovated in 2019, featuring about 100,000 square feet of office space in total and a food court on the ground floor. Mounsey is part of the group that led the reported $17 million renovation.
Mounsey says Wonderground TI is distinct from another project with a nearly identical name that he's planning at 815 N. Lincoln, across Lincoln Street from the Wonder Building, at the site formerly occupied by Spokane Valley-based S&J Engines Inc.
As reported by the Journal of Business last October, site plans for the project on Lincoln, dubbed Wonderground, call for the construction of a 12,800-square-foot indoor sports facility that will feature six pickleball courts, golf simulators, a bar/café space, and a patio fronting Lincoln and Mallon Avenue on the northeast corner of the lot. The project is valued at $1.5 million, according to a pre-development application filed with the city.
Mounsey says the original Wonderground project still is being planned, but will feature outdoor pickleball courts.
