Work is progressing on a handful of middle school projects in Spokane, says Greg Forsyth, director of capital projects for Spokane Public Schools.
In northeast Spokane, at 4106 N. Cook, the $46.2 million Shaw Middle School project is on track to be completed by August, Forsyth says.
The project also includes Hillyard Public Library, which is being built within the 150,000-square-foot middle school structure, and a separate building to house On Track Academy.
Spokane Valley-based Lydig Construction Inc. is the contractor on the project. Spokane-based Integrus Architecture PS designed both buildings.
Forsyth says the school district and the city of Spokane are partnering on a traffic calming project along Cook Street. Lydig Construction will begin work to make the street more pedestrian friendly this summer.
At 2404 W. Longfellow, in northwest Spokane, Glover Middle School is nearly closed in, Forsyth says. The $43.5 million, 135,000-square-foot project is on track to be completed in time for the 2021-2022 school year.
“We’re continuing to work on the exterior and interior,” Forsyth says.
Jackson Contractor Group Inc., which is based in Missoula, Montana, and has a Spokane office, is the contractor on the 135,000-square-foot structure. Spokane-based NAC Architecture designed the school.
The existing Glover Middle School structure will be demolished in late June, Forsyth says.
Three unnamed middle schools funded through the 2018 bond are in the midst of the naming process, Forsyth says. For now, they are referred to by their location in the Spokane area: northwest, northeast, and southside middle schools.
Each middle school building will be about 140,000 square feet, Forsyth says.
Forsyth says northwest and northeast middle schools will be built simultaneously at an anticipated cost of $44.5 million each, and the schools are expected to be completed in August 2022.
The northwest school will be located at 5020 W. Wellesley, near Joe Albi Stadium, and the northeast school will be built at 1250 E. North Foothills Drive, south of Gonzaga Preparatory School.
Forsyth says both of those middle school projects are being developed through a general contractor/construction manager model. Garco Construction Inc., of Spokane, is the GCCM on the northwest project, and Spokane-based Bouten Construction Co. is GCCM on northeast.
“We’re hoping construction will start (this month),” he says.
The southside middle school will be built near Mullan Road Elementary, along East 63rd Avenue. Forsyth says Integrus Architecture has been selected to design the $48 million school.
A $49 million, 140,000-square-foot replacement for Sacajawea Middle School, at 401 E. 33rd Ave., is in the design stage, Forsyth says.
Spokane-based ALSC Architects PS is the architect on the project. The existing school will remain open while the new middle school is built, Forsyth says.
Forsyth says both southside and Sacajawea will be developed through a general contractor/construction manager model. He expects the process of selecting a contractor for each project will be completed before the end of March, and both are expected to be completed by August 2023.
