Icon Corp., a Spokane Valley commercial roofing concern, says it has bought a 6,000-square-foot building about 10 miles east of the location it has leased for several years and has moved some of its operations there.
The purchase of the 6,000-square-foot former Systematic Machinery LLC building, at 3410 N. Eden, ensures Icon will have adequate space during the peak summer roofing season, says David Johnson, Icon's treasurer and a project manager with the family-run company. The company has moved its plastic-membrane roofing division and administrative offices to the site, which is north of the Spokane River and about a half-mile west of Barker Road, Johnson says.
Icon will maintain its sheet-metal division at its longtime 4,000-square-foot leased space at 1014 N. Lake Road.
The new space will allow more efficient arrangements of supplies and equipment, giving employees more breathing room, Johnson says.
Icon fabricates, installs, maintains, and repairs metal and plastic-membrane roofing systems for commercial structures. It also makes and installs composite metal wall panels, he says.
The company's work force changes seasonally and peaked at 50 workers last summer, Johnson says, adding that the company had record revenue last year.
It's too early to tell how business volume is shaping up for 2009, because the company usually lands most of its jobs later in the year, he says.
Icon was founded in 1998. Johnson's father, Max Johnson, is the company's president and CEO, and his brother, Jack, is vice president and a project manager.
Tracy Lucas and Mark Lucas, both of Spokane-based Kiemle & Hagood Co., handled the real estate transaction involving the Eden Road site.
