A former funeral home building on North Monroe Street could be remodeled into apartment units, according to plans filed with the city of Spokane.

A change-of-use application calls for renovating the former Hazen & Jaeger Funeral home, at 1306 N. Monroe, into 19 living units. 

As envisioned, the Monroe Lofts conversion would include six one-bedroom units, six two-bedroom units, four three-bedroom units, one four-bedroom unit, and two studio apartments, the application shows.

Architect and project manager Luke Grimsrud, of Spokane-based Uptic Studios Inc., is listed as the project applicant. He represents owner AJB Monroe Operating Co. LLC, of Spokane, which acquired the Hazen & Jaeger property last November for $1.1 million, according to data from the Spokane County Assessor’s Office.

Grimsrud declines to comment on the project. 

No contractor or civil engineer is listed in application materials filed with the city.

Preliminary plans call for creating a loft level for some units in the 34,000-square-foot building, which currently has two stories plus a basement. Apartments will range in size from a 475-square-foot studio to a 2,100-square-foot penthouse unit with three bedrooms.

The project will include a private shared garden, plans show. Some units will have private decks, and some will have wine cellars. Plans show 20 parking stalls.

A project value isn’t listed on the application.

In the application, Grimsrud notes that the owners of the Monroe Lofts project also plan to demolish a parking lot at 1315 N. Lincoln, just east of the old funeral home building, and construct a new apartment building. A construction application for that project hasn’t been filed yet.

Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home stopped holding memorials in 2020 at its North Monroe Street location. Operations have continued at its Spokane Valley location, at 1306 N. Pines.
