The Spokane chapter of the American Institute of Architects plans to celebrate National Architecture Week with a slate of events April 10-16.
Thirteen different events are scheduled with participating groups, mostly at River Park Square downtown, but also on the Washington State University Spokane campus, the Magic Lantern Theater, the NAC/Architecture Inc. building, and other sites downtown.
Matt Jacoby, of Bernardo Wills Architects PC, of Spokane, says the intent is "to engage the local community in a conversation on why design matters, to highlight the best of architecture past and present, and to encourage the future designers in our community."
The week will kick off Saturday, April 10, with WSU architecture students and interns installing a sculpture and kiosk in River Park Square, demonstrating the future of computer-aided design and fabrication. Also planned there that day, the Construction Specifications Institute will host an exhibit explaining the processes involved in designing, developing, and constructing a building, and Habitat for Humanity representatives here will discuss that nonprofit's "community-oriented sustainable projects."
Events planned later in the week include a seminar on changes to the International Building Code that will take effect July 1, a walking tour of historic buildings, and a seminar on how to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certification.
