City leaders propose removal of building height limits downtown

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown and members of the City Council have proposed an interim zoning ordinance that would eliminate building height limits in and around downtown.

The proposed ordinance is intended to spur housing construction and promote other economic development, a press release from the city states.

“By eliminating building height limits, we can unlock new opportunities for housing, business growth, and job creation,” Brown says.

If approved by the City Council and Brown, the ordinance would remain in effect for six months.

“Eliminating height requirements is another step toward building more affordable housing in underutilized spaces while creating a more vibrant and active downtown, which will generate more business,” says Councilmember Zack Zappone.

The proposal was introduced during an Urban Experience Committee meeting this week.
