City approves retail-residence building

January 15, 2009

City of Spokane Hearing Examiner Greg Smith has approved a conditional-use permit for Brian Jennings and Jeff Gilson, of Spokane, to convert the historic St. Paul Market building, at 2023 W. Dean, into a specialty retail sales and service building with a residence at the back.

Jennings and Gilson couldn't be reached for comment, but according to the hearing examiner's decision, the front 610 square feet of the 1,320-square-foot building, which originally served as a butcher shop, would be developed as a retail area.

The remaining 710 square feet would be converted to a residence.

The decision says Jennings and Gilson also plan to construct a second, 620-square-foot dwelling unit at the back of the 6,000-square-foot property.

The St. Paul Market building was constructed in 1905, and was listed on the Spokane Register of Historic Places in September 2007.
